At a very top line level, spritzers are a mix of wine and soda water. This is similar to a beer shandy, which mixes beer with a soft drink like lemonade, except of course it is done with wine!
The ratio of wine to soda water varies but a general rule of thumb is 70 / 30 mix (wine to soda water respectively).
Wine spritzers can be quite popular for a variety of reasons, including:
- Lower in alcohol as the wine is diluted with soda water. Often this will bring the alcohol from about 12-14% down to approximately 8%.
- Creates a refreshing drink for a hot summer's day.
- Spritzers often use fruit and other botanicals or spices to create an array of flavours
